Japan harpoons 13 minke whales
Greenpeace says 13 minke whales have been killed by Japanese whalers in the Southern Ocean.
The Japanese whalers are hoping to catch more than 900 minke whales and 10 endangered fin whales during the season, which ends in March.
Japan says the hunt is scientific but Greenpeace says it is for commercial purposes.

This type of article has been front page news quite a bit lately. Australians seem convinced that the Japanese are killing whales for food under the auspices of science. In all the years I lived in Japan I don't remember hearing anything about whaling, for food, science or anything else, so while I instinctively defend Japan in this, I don't have any of the facts to back it up.
On the one hand, you've gotta wonder exactly what kind of research involves killing whales and on the other, why do the Aussies care so much? A lot of people here think that the Japanese just want them to eat, like whale meat is a delicacy or something. A while back there was a big deal in the media about some small town who had a fast food place with whale-burgers on their menu, but the way it was reported on it sounded it was available in any McDonalds in Japan. I was slightly annoyed, 'cause it was so skewed and gave Japan a bad name.
If anyone can enlighten me about local whale research in Japan I'd be interested, just for the sake of setting the record straight. Cheers. ;)

Well, my only experience with it was once Mike went to do a show and Keith went along with the older kids, and they all came back talking about how they'd eaten whale!
Apparently, if I remember correctly, they even got to see or go on the whaling boat.
But the fact that it was such a surprise to me and to everyone here I think shows how rare it is, it's definitely not a regular meal, and not available at McD's.
I think they use it for the fat and stuff.

Im in aus too and have been hearing all this whale jibberish although, I think the aussies stand correct in this issue.
In japan, I used to teach english to this kid from a VERY wealthy fam. They'd go out to sushi bars all teh time. I had the weird but interesting experience of eating deep fried whale meat. Tasted abit like beef liver but better. Apparently it's a delicacy and I can tell the well to do's frequent it as it's also I think a (status symbol)
But as far as having it everywhere in maccas...I think thats abit over the top.
Lils......are you Lilia? I did a little search on the whole whaling thing and here's what I've come up with:
* Minke whales are the smallest whales
* They are not endangered
* They are on the list of threatened species, although their numbers show no signs of decreasing
* They were never hunted previously because their small size made them inefficient for commercial use
* The Japanese are the first to undertake extensive research on the minke whales
* They kill the whales to learn things like blubber thickness, stomach contents, to test their blood and reproductivity, etc...
* The Japanese believe that their research on minke whales will help with the preservation of larger whales close to extinction
* They also believe that the smaller and more numerous minke whales are competing with the larger whales for food so they are "culling" them to keep their numbers under control
All things considered, if they are conducting legitimate research, I don't have a problem with them eating the meat afterwards, it's better than having it go to waste. I also don't have a problem with them eating the meat, period, as long as it's not an endangered whale. I would never eat it myself, and I'm not a proponent of hunting wild animals for sport, but people fish and hunt for food all the time. I don't see what makes these whales so special.
Here in Australia kangaroos, dingos and wild horses are culled and no one thinks anything of it. Is it because the whales are mammals? Are whales more worthy of life and protection than any other species (excluding all endangered species, of course)?
It just bothers me because it seems to be sensationalism based on ignorance and the media is harping on the aussies' sentimentality to make a big deal out of nothing.

I was almost convinced simply because I haven't given it much thought, that the japanese were really killing them just to eat. But those reasons make alot of sense.
You can never trust the media. Save a few programs on sbs and oh alright abc too ;) I have learned from 2 years here...channel 9/10/7...doooddddggyyy hahaha
