God's Will?
We saw the movie "Kingdom of Heaven" the other night. I enjoyed it, thought it was good and was very happy to see Orlando Bloom reclaim the masculinity he lost while making "Troy". I just have to vent on something though and that is how people can take their will and impose it on other people using God's name, as in "it's God's will". It's so sad because this is still happening today, look at Bush vs Osama, both are convinced they are doing God's will and are imposing all that comes with it on the world around them with a vengeance. It's just so annoying that all the differences people choose to get so dogmatic over (as far as religion goes) are those thought up by humans or human interpretation. How did we get so many different versions of "truth"? People are certainly entitled to their opinion, and even to their opinion of faith, but they are so not entitled to violently impose this on other people. To me, that's taking the name of the Lord in vain.

Agree 100%!
Though I didn't really like the movie all that much.
Good point.
I recently read a book called "Adam, Eve and the Serpent" regarding the early church and the changes it made through the fifth century. It becomes very apparent just how much human interpretation of "God's will" was involved in the consolidation of Christianity and the emergance of today's dominating religion. It was not without a great deal of bloodshed, and persecution of minority sects from both within the church and from without. It's fascinating and apparently not much has changed since then, not just for Christianity but almost every major religion.
And the awful thing about it is that it gives all people with faith a bad name, when that is so not what faith in God is all about. Book sounds interesting Loxy, by the way, I liked your top 100 list. ;)
Ha thanks..I recently chickend out and took it down. :(
Exactly! What I didn't like about the movie was that it showed the ones who made the most problems the religious fanatics on both sides. Jerusalem, of course, via Orlando, were honorable, level headed and only cared about the ppl, (according to his speech) and the Arabs wanted the land.
Which is good and all, but now it's all about the property, forget the people. The Israelis throw a huge fit about letting go of Gaza, and they had notice of it, and new houses to move into! And the pity of the world. A far cry from what they allow the Palestinians.
I rarely rant about politics, but that movie was a bit too coincidental to be just about gallantry and honor. Someone's trying to get everyone to remember that the city was theirs some thousand years ago, and how they gave it up so nicely.
Sol's about to roll over in his grave, isn't he? But at least his dad will like me... :D!
ooops. that was long.
Well, if you put it that way...... I wasn't even thinking about the whole Arab/Jewish thing. Since everyone in Jerusalem during the crusades were Christian Europeans, it struck me more as establishment/politics versus humanity/conscience. The middle-east situation is so sad and unfair, I have a hard time thinking about it it makes me so mad and there's nothing I can do about it except pray for God's mercy on the innocents.....it's just not right. The thing I liked about the movie was that Orlando Bloom's character turned down the opportunity to "do some evil for a greater good". In movies today and in life in general there are so many shades of gray, it was nice to see a good old fashioned hero. Simplistic, I know. I must have been in a real sappy mood. :D
True. The crusaders were worse than the Jews.
The name of God taken in vain.
Totally on a diff plane of thought but..
Orlando Bloom bothers me so much.. hehe.. I think he needs to roll over and quit trying to be a wannabe man. But yeah, that one part where he refuses to do evil is repectful.. gotta give him that much huh. I liked his Dad in that movie.. so much more of a mans man then bloomingdale.
Ooooh Laura, didn't know you had a thing for older men. Orlando's a pretty boy, but he's nice to look at, and his acting isn't too bad. I know, I know, totally my opinion. I already know my taste in men is totally opposite to Aich's, nice to know I won't be getting any competition from you either Lo. Hee hee!
lol... nah, nothing to do with older men. I'm just not much of a pretty boy fan. oh my God! can Sol be considered a pretty boy?!
heh.. never thought of him that way before.. but dont' tell him I said that!
Don't worry, I don't like pretty boys as a rule. Don't exactly know what it is about guys that makes them attractive to me, it's a case by case sort of thing. ---Although I will say that I'm a sucker for guys with darker hair and light eyes. I think for a guy to be attractive he's gotta have a combination of looks and character, there isn't a bigger turn off than a guy whose a looker but whose head is full of air. I just remember looking through a magazine once with Aich and every single guy that she thought was hot, I didn't think much of and vise versa, Funny how we ended up marrying brothers. ;)
Ooh, I remember that magazine.
And yes, we did marry brothers, but they are alike in that they are like the north and south poles.
Heehee, I just got my own joke.
